Dear all,
This is the latest device i have for my Homeplug (Powerline Networking). A very nice addition for my entertainment station which consist of an IPTV device, a SMART TV, and a soon to come gamine console (Read XBOX360 or PS3). Thus i need a device so i can connect to my home network with internet access.
With this device, i can connect 4 devices to my home network and thus it won’t be an issue of getting 4 homeplugs anymore. I will be doing some simple test on this device to test the data transfer speed by the means of ping test, data transfer from one computer (plug to this device) to another computer (located in the room with one homeplug 200Mbps) as well as data transfer to my NAS (located in my “server room”, aka Storeroom).
Hope the test will yield some consistent results but hey, who knows what interesting readings may appear. Stay tuned for some nice product pics taken by yours truly too.

Today is finally a day i reckon and a day i finally settled into my own new place. Some people call it a Flat, some people call it Apartments but i don’t quite care what it is called. I call it MY OWN PLACE!
I have finally gotten my ADSL line transferred from my parents place to my new place and set up my Homeplug infrastructure.
In order to let you understand how everything works, see the picture below. This excludes my QNAP TS-410 which i have but yet to power up.
This simple diagram shows a generic layout with a living room, Guest room, Study room, Bed room and a store room.
This layout shows that i place my router in a storeroom where a telephone point is terminated thus my ADSL Modem Router can connect with. And Every living space has a homeplug device. In the Living room where my media devices such as a IPTV console is located and connected to my TV. It has a homeplug on the power point.
Same goes for all the rooms including the storeroom where my router is.
By following this set up, you will need at least 2 Pair of Homeplugs (4 homeplug devices). I used a combination of HL280E, HL110EP and HL115EP plus a WL556E. I have done some reviews on these homeplugs models which you can read more about in my previous post.
My living room actually requires 2 homeplug devices and 1 wireless signal repeater (1 for TV and 1 for IPTV) thus i am mulling the idea of getting the latest HL125G (its a 4 port Homeplug switch – Click here)
Until i find a more pressing need in terms of network speed and lower power consumption, else i will need to review my needs. Or maybe if Aztech can provide me with a device to trial, i won’t mind and if its good, i will do a more thorough speed test on it.
In the meantime, i will be doing a power consumption measurement in terms of dollars and cents and provide some findings with a tinge of asian context.
Until then, i hope my diagram had provided a on the ground view for you on Homeplug set up.
psst, did i tell you that i didn’t do any configuration at all? I really just plug and play, my IPTV console simply work and same goes for my internet connectivity on the laptop that i am using to write this post for you.

TP Link 3G/3.75G Wireless N router (Model TL-MR3020)

Beginning.
Recently i had a situation which i need to solve and that is my mum’s place need internet connection but at the same time, a simple solution is required instead of the big bulky router with cables running all over setup.
My mum is a recently converted internet user. She had no previous computer knowledge thus she went for a basic computer cum internet course as well as the most advance Email communication course at the local community centre. As she is still very much a new computer user, all her laptop setup and internet connections is done by yours truly.
But as i am moving out in the next couple of weeks, i am migrating my internet connection and all the infrastructure including my Aztech Homeplugs therefore, i was on the look out for an easy simple solution that still works on ethernet cable and requires nothing more than 3 steps. With some initial configuration of the device by me, the 3 step usage solution is no longer a dream but a reality.
TP Link 3G/3.75G router is really simple to use. Moreover, it has all the features of a full fledge router such as Wireless N, Mac filtering, firewall rules, Ethernet port (only 1) and anything else you could have think of in a normal wireless N broadband ADSL router. Just that this router runs its internet connection via a mobile broadband dongle.
It comes with microUSB (for power via a separate power adapter or USB of the laptop), ethernet port (for connecting the ethernet cable to the laptop/pc if you do not like to use wireless) as well as a USB port (for the connection of USB Broadband Mobile dongle).
Initial configuration
The configuration requires you to plug in the USB mobile broadband dongle and the model will be automatically detected by the router. Thereafter, you need to continue with the set up by choosing the country you are in as well as choosing the service provider such as Vodafone, Singtel, M1, etc. (Remember to choose Connect Automatically option)
After the set up is done, you will notice that the LED light on the dongle should be lighted up in solid colour. And the router’s Internet symbol should be lighted in solid yellowish green color too.
This indicates that the internet connection is establish.
Click on Status page and you will see that the 3G/3.75G signal strength as well as other data such as packet up and packet down.
You can try out the internet connection via your trusty usual browser such as IE, Firefox, Chrome or Safari.
Experience
The experience on setting up, configuring, using and sharing the internet connection is really a breeze. I do not see much of an issue except that it took a couple of mins to detect the model of the USB Mobile broadband dongle
Even if the USB Mobile broadband dongle that you have is not detected automatically by the router, you could try and download the list via TP-Link website and update your router.
I have done some test on the heat dissipation on this mobile device and found it to be acceptable. Not hot but with a slight warmth (good for a cold winter night) though the mobile broadband dongle is abit more warm than the router but thats quite usual.
During this test, i was using a USB Mobile broadband dongle by Huawei ( Model – XXXXX ).
Overall, the experience on setting this device up was pleasant and simple enough for a layman.
Price & availability
This device cost SGD$49 and it is available at computer stores such as Challenger. You can check with your local distributor for more information.
Suitability of device
There are numerous uses for this device such as an ad-hoc internet connection sharing or even personal home use for those who do not want to have bulky cabling in their rented apartments.
I would like to point out that it should not be use for latency critical applications such as online Multi-player games or First Person shooting games.

It’s been a while since I last posted. Actually I was busy with a new upcoming project which involve a whole lot of aztech homeplugs as the basis of the project. There are numerous factors to decide and discuss with my client.
Data and time criticality is one of the factors.
As we run some tests on new layouts, I will post the results as I will be putting in a mixture of aztech homeplugs such as 115EP and 280EP.
Possibly with a NAS as well.
With so many stuff ongoing, I am packed.
But I will release some of these implementations to showcase what Aztech homeplugs can achieve.

I just saw this on Aztech Facebook page, its a link and i found it to be a very quick, simple, direct and visually appealing explaination on how and when to use Aztech Homeplug.
Nice stuff by Aztech as i don’t see such guide very often.

Aztech Homeplug and QNAP NAS
With my recent test of Aztech Homeplug and it pretty impressive power consumption
plus it good network speed (Internet as well as within my home network), there arises
one small little problem. My connection speed to the NAS is always slower than internet speed
and i just cannot phantom.
Then i stumble upon an article in QNAP forum and tried it. I found it to be true.
A normal consumer would think like this, if i have a power consuming device and in order to save on electricity bills,
i will not leave it turn on when i am out of the house to go for work, esp when no one is at home the whole day.
So naturally, devices such as Homeplugs and TVs and such (except the fridge) will be switch off.
Only when i come home from work, and if i wanna use the computer, will i switch on my homeplug and leave it running.
Internet speed is not affected as the homeplug connects to the internet via the router. It does not talk to my NAS.
Speed is good. I can achieve speeds that is just as good as a Cat5E cable 100MB connection.
But when i copy a file out of the NAS or into the NAS or simply opening up a file in my NAS, it is slow. SLOW
Then i found out this truth. Whenever you switch off the Homeplug device and you wanna turn it on again, follow the sequence.
Ignoring the Router (just leave it switched on)
1) Switch off your NAS
2) Switch on all your homeplug devices
3) Switch ON your nas again
Whew! thats all you need to do before your connectivity to the NAS is back to its speedy gonzales speed.
What a pain.
Not sure why. If any electrical engineering trained specialist can explain why, i will be glad to open my ears to listen and learn.
